Tales from the Spoopy Inn – Chapter 8

Keys, Clones, and the Golden Vault

Sessions 19–20

After months of investigations, gang wars, shape-shifting chefs, and slightly cursed plushies, the Spoopy Inn crew finally had all three keys to unlock the Vault of Dragons. What could possibly go wrong?

(Everything. Everything could go wrong.)

Unlocking the Vault

With the Beholder plushie, Lyf’s tavern song, and a drop of gold dragon blood in hand, the party returned to the Brandath Mausoleum and descended into the sealed chamber.

As the final key activated, a massive stone dragon-shaped door rumbled open, revealing the Vault of Dragons—a breathtaking underground space filled with golden light, ancient carvings, and, well… a mountain of stolen treasure.

At the heart of it: over 500,000 gold dragons, hidden by Dagult Neverember, Isac’s charming and corrupt father.

Victory, right?

Of course not.

Clone Wars and Moral Meltdowns

Just as they entered the vault, they were confronted by… Dagult Neverember.

Except—plot twist—it was a clone.

The real Dagult had prepared for someone to find the vault, and left behind a version of himself to “ensure his legacy.”

The clone immediately began monologuing. He insisted the gold should be used to “restore the power and influence of Waterdeep’s rightful leadership.” Translation: he wanted it all back.

The party, predictably, disagreed.

Things escalated quickly. Isac’s ghost appeared, flinging emotional shade. Eva nearly activated her encrypted “hidden mode.” LDO licked the gold. Phoenix gave an inspiring speech about justice that no one listened to.

Viktor triggered the trapdoor anyway.

Vault Fight: Go Time

The vault came alive.

Stone guardians activated. Traps triggered. The clone summoned arcane guardians made of gold dust and regret. Marvin rage-tackled a construct. Grape defended Eva while she wrestled with visions from the Stone.

LDO, naturally, turned into a T-Rex.

The clone Dagult was powerful, but also pompous—and eventually, the party managed to outwit, outfight, and out-sass him into oblivion.

Eva landed the final blow with a spell powered by the Stone of Golorr itself. The clone screamed something dramatic about “legacy” and exploded into fine, glittering dust.

The Gold Dilemma

With the vault secure and no enemies left standing, it was decision time.

They had five minutes before City Watch reinforcements arrived.

They had a mountain of gold.

They also had promises—to Aureliax, to Renear, and technically to Waterdeep itself.

So, in the most Spoopy Inn way possible… they took just enough.

Not too greedy. Not too noble. Just enough to upgrade the tavern, fund their next adventure, and maybe buy a slightly better pony.

The rest? Returned to the city.

(Well… most of it.)

Back at the Inn

They returned home to Trollskull Manor as heroes—sort of.

Eva was quiet, unsure what the Stone had done to her.

LDO hung a severed construct arm on the tavern wall as “art.”

Phoenix insisted they use some gold to install a lift for accessibility.

Marvin opened a secret savings account under a fake name.

Grape built a new, smaller version of himself named Raisin.

And Ghost Isac? He just floated upstairs with a sarcastic, “You’re welcome.”

Spoopy Inn was safe.

For now.

Coming soon in Chapter 9: new threats, festival invitations, kids learning how to pickpocket, and the return of at least one dead character. Probably.
