At Just Support, we know that some days start slow, but with the right encouragement and a little adventure, they can turn into something special. Whether it’s promoting independence, encouraging social engagement, or just making the day fun, our team is there to help every step of the way.
Today’s journey follows one of our adventurers as they transition from wanting a quiet day at home to an exciting outing filled with laughter, games, and great company.
Starting the Day: Easing Into Plans
The shift began with a slow morning, as our adventurer was already awake but hadn’t had breakfast yet. While they ate, we chatted about potential plans for the day, leaving the decision open-ended to give them control over their choices.
Initially, they preferred to stay at home, but as the morning progressed, a change in plans was needed. Their parent had to go out, meaning a small push was necessary to get them out the door.
Rather than forcing a decision, we introduced a motivating factor—checking out what Just Support had planned for the school holiday program. Upon discovering that the group was heading to Holey Moley for Putt Putt, our adventurer decided to give it a go.
Hitting the Greens: Putt Putt & Social Connections
By 10 AM, we set off for Garden City, navigating the busy car park before heading inside to meet up with the group. As we waited, we chatted about plans for later in the week, building excitement and providing a sense of structure.
Before the fun could begin, our adventurer asked for some lunch, ensuring they had enough energy for the activities ahead. Encouraging self-advocacy in making decisions around meals is always a positive step toward independence.
Finally, the rest of the group arrived, and the real fun began!
✔️ Mini Golf Magic – Laughter filled the air as our adventurer teamed up with friends, navigating the creative courses at Holey Moley.
✔️ Social Engagement – Playing alongside others helped build confidence, teamwork, and connection.
✔️ Enjoying the Moment – Sometimes, it’s about letting go of worries and just having fun—and that’s exactly what happened.
Our adventurer, alongside their friend, had a fantastic time, with smiles and laughter proving that the decision to head out was well worth it.
Game Time: Bowling & Timezone Adventures
After Putt Putt, the adventure continued as the group headed down to Timezone. Here, our adventurer and their friends took on a new challenge—bowling!
🎳 Two full games of bowling had everyone engaged and focused.
🎮 Arcade fun followed, allowing for independent play while staying within a safe and supportive environment.
Seeing our adventurer light up with enthusiasm, engaging in both friendly competition and teamwork, was a huge win—especially after a morning that started with reluctance to go out.
Winding Down at the Skate Park
The final stop of the day was the skate park at Waller Road, where another friend joined in. This spontaneous social interaction was a great way to wrap up the day, giving our adventurer the chance to connect with different friends in a relaxed setting.
By the time we headed home, our adventurer was ready to call it a day, having enjoyed a full day of activities, connection, and fun.
Reflections & Looking Ahead
While today’s shift didn’t start with high energy or motivation, it ended with laughter, adventure, and meaningful social connections. This highlights the importance of:
✔️ Encouraging engagement without pressure – Starting the day with choices helped our adventurer feel in control of their plans.
✔️ Using gentle motivation – Introducing Just Support‘s holiday program as an option created excitement without forcing a decision.
✔️ Reinforcing independence – Whether it was choosing lunch, participating in group activities, or engaging socially, every step helped build confidence.
Moving forward, we can continue to:
- Encourage participation in more group activities to reinforce social engagement.
- Find ways to make morning transitions smoother, allowing our adventurer to ease into plans without resistance.
- Support more independence in decision-making, including planning out future outings together.
While the day started quiet and uncertain, it ended with fun, laughter, and a sense of achievement—a perfect reminder that sometimes, the best days come from taking that first step outside.
