At Just Support, every shift is an opportunity to empower, encourage, and uplift our adventurers. Whether it’s helping to navigate emotions, build independence, or tackle schoolwork, our team is always there to support, guide, and celebrate every achievement—big or small.
Today’s journey takes us alongside one of our adventurers as they balance wind-down time, homework challenges, and self-motivation, all while gaining confidence in their abilities.
Starting the Quest: Easing into the Afternoon
After a long day at school, our adventurer arrived at pick-up feeling a little drained but still engaged in conversation on the way home. One of the first hurdles of the afternoon came when we had to break the news—their speech therapy session had been cancelled. The unexpected change threw them off slightly, as no one had informed them beforehand.
Uncertainty and unexpected changes can sometimes be overwhelming, so our staff approached the moment with calm reassurance. While there was a slight dip in mood, our adventurer processed the update well, and with a bit of positive reinforcement, they were able to move forward with the rest of their day.
Balancing Downtime and Responsibilities
Knowing that transitions can be tough, we negotiated some well-earned wind-down time before tackling homework, something we had already discussed and planned earlier in the week. However, when we arrived home, a new challenge appeared—a suggested change in routine that meant starting work earlier than expected.
For our adventurer, changing expectations mid-plan was difficult, so we decided to stick to the full 45 minutes of downtime to keep things consistent. Creating a structured but flexible approach is key in helping young people build independence and confidence in their routine.
During this time, we watched some YouTube videos while our adventurer played on their Switch, a small but meaningful break that allowed them to reset before shifting into study mode.
Overcoming Homework Challenges
At 4:15 PM, it was time to switch gears. Homework can sometimes feel overwhelming, so our staff helped break it down into smaller, achievable steps. Our adventurer’s biggest concern was their science assignment, as they felt they had fallen behind. However, after reviewing the task together, we realised that their individual work couldn’t be completed until in-class group work was done—meaning they weren’t behind after all!
This small realisation was a relief and a confidence boost, showing that sometimes anxiety about falling behind is just a misunderstanding. With science set aside, we moved on to maths—something our adventurer actually enjoys but still needed some motivation to start.
Mathematical Precision: A Lesson in Independence
With careful calculation and determination, our adventurer worked out exactly how much homework was required—choosing to do precisely one-quarter of each section. While they were enthusiastic about getting through the work, they were reluctant to double-check their answers.
Our staff encouraged a second look, and after reviewing together, we spotted a few misread questions that had led to incorrect answers. Instead of frustration, we reframed the moment as an opportunity to learn, and our adventurer corrected and highlighted their mistakes for future reference in class.
This moment was a huge win—not only did they complete the work correctly, but they also learned the value of self-checking and problem-solving independently.
Creativity & Confidence in English
With maths completed, we moved on to English Literature, where our adventurer tackled a homework module with enthusiasm and humour. Once finished, we encouraged them to start planning their next assignment—a creative writing piece.
Initially hesitant, they eventually settled on a story exploring the theme of conflict—a strong and thoughtful choice that allowed them to take ownership of their work and express themselves in a creative way.
Celebrating Small Wins & Looking Ahead
By the end of the session, our adventurer was in high spirits. They even mentioned feeling hungry—an important sign that their mood had lifted after a productive afternoon. Their family congratulated them on their hard work, and they beamed with pride at the recognition.
As our shift wrapped up, we reflected on some key areas to focus on moving forward:
- Encouraging flexibility with changes in routine – Finding strategies to make adjustments feel less disruptive.
- Fostering confidence in schoolwork – Helping our adventurer recognise their own progress rather than focusing on what they think they haven’t done.
- Building self-checking skills – Reinforcing the value of reviewing work to ensure accuracy and build independent problem-solving abilities.
With another successful quest completed, our adventurer ended the day feeling proud of their efforts—and we couldn’t be prouder to be part of their journey!
